Twirling...?

Tiki TwirlTwirling is a form of movement in which a person controls the motion of an object repeatly in a swing, rotation or push etc, creating a pattern in the trail where the objects has moved. What a mouth full! But think of an stick, a weighted sock or a single broom stick spinning in the hands of a performer. Now thats twirling. Twirling has now includes a wider range of objects, for example poi, staff, hula, contact objects, wands, yoyos, batons, diabolos, magic sticks, magician's balls, and the list goes on forever. It is up to our imagination to come up with new "toys".

Nevertheless, mastering twirling can be joy to many and painful to some. The play on dexterity have detered many, claiming that they lack that innate skill. Over here in Tiki Twirl, we oppose this view by getting everyone to have a go and decide for yourself!

Poi:

There are many variations to pois. Some are made from socks, some are an "adjustment" to a ball, however they all ultimately are the same. Pois are a cord/length of material weighted at one end with the other end in hand, which always comes in a pair. Then swung around the body in a motion to create a pattern. Tiki Twirl pays homage to the origins of one form of twirling, poi twirling, by drawing from its Maori roots and hence "Tiki".

Household Poi: Two plastic bags with some beans in it and tied to prevent spillage!

Staff:

Tiki TwirlThere are also many variations to staffs, varying in lengths. And ultimately you are looking to find a shape of a straight and long stick, much like a broom stick. Some are made shorter like batons and some can be longer than the person using them. They too can be made from different materials and can be used in singularly or in a pair or a few at a time in juggling stunts.

Household Staff: One meter-long broom stick, with smoothed out ends!

In Practice:

Tiki TwirlThere are two main mediums in which one can use the moves from twirling. The first is fire twirling. Fire twirling is not a well known art in Singapore. However, does show case an exciting display made by the trails in which the fueled equipment makes. The possibilities are endless with the equipment one can create. Mixed with the right music and movements, fire twirling is definitely is an act not to be missed.

The second is UV/LED twirling, an alternative to fire. The use of ultraviolet lights with reactive fabrics and materials produces a hypnotizing mix of colors will twirled. Not many people know what UV/LED twirling is, so here is an amazing video from the Flys!

And of cause, they are those which are lined with padding (from cotton to rubber to sponge etc.) to prevent any hard bumps from the endless fun sessions practicing a move.
